- About the files in this DEM1 - DEM6 Directories
-
- A DEM is a Digital Elevation Map for VistaPro, sometimes referred to as a
- 'scape' or landscape. It is a 3D object you can render with the Vista or
- VistaPro software from Virtual Reality Laboratories in San Luis Obispo, CA.
- If you want more information on VistaPro, contact VRLI at 805-545-8515.
-
- VistaPro ace programmer, Clint Woeltjen, has informed MegageM that these
- DEM files can be used on both the Amiga and MSDOS/clone versions of
- VistaPro.
-
- You can use them in a variety of ways for Vista 3-D renderings and terrific
- fly-by animations of the Mandelbrot Set and some other related fractals.
-
- The first 5 sets were made using FractalPro, MegageM's fractal art and
- animation package. FractalPro has a capability to create Vista type
- landscape (DEM) files as it draws its fractal images.
-
- The sixth set of DEMs was made using ScapeMaker which can convert most
- Amiga IFF images into Vista landscape files. ScapeMaker was used on some
- other FractalPro pictures to create the sixth set.
-
- Of course if you like this idea of rendering 3D visions of fractal objects,
- FractalPro is the tool to use. FractalPro will generate these kinds of
- DEM files for you 'on the fly' as it renders images of fractals on an
- Amiga. Also consider using MegageM's ScapeMaker program which can let
- you convert 2D drawings to DEMs and can also let you manipulate and
- combine any DEMs from a variety of sources, not just from 2D drawings
- or from FractalPro.
-
- The DEMs on these sets represent many many hours of FractalPro exploration
- and DEM creation, so you get a selection of 76 DEM files and can do
- your own terrific 3-D fractal renderings quickly with Vista and VistaPro.
-
- I tried to get at least one Vista rendering of one of the DEMs in each
- set, so you could get a quick feel for what they're going to look like.
- I also segregated the different types of fractals and types of DEMs on
- the different sets. There are 6 different sets in this group with:
-
- 1. FractalPro Mandelbrot Mountains
- 2. FractalPro Julia Set Mountains
- 3. FractalPro Mandelbrot and Julia Set Lakes
- 4. FractalPro Cube Mandelbrot Set Mountains and Lakes
- 5. FractalPro Cube Julia Set Mountains and Lakes
- 6. ScapeMaker/FractalPro Mandelbrot and Julia Lakes
-
- Each of these sets is in its own directory, namely, DEM1, DEM2, etc.
-
- Cube Mandelbrot and Cube Julia Sets can be generated in FractalPro and they
- are mathematically related to regular Mandelbrot and Julia Sets, but with
- a twist. Look 'em over.

- Vista Rendering Tips for Fractal Scapes
-
- Fractals are by their nature rather 'noisy'. If you find some of the
- DEMs tend to render with high 'spikes' next to deep ruts, try using
- ScapeMaker or VistaPro's SMOOTH option (maybe even more than once) to
- smooth them out. You'll get the best results using Vista and VistaPro
- Gouraud Shading or Altitude Shading and Polygon 1 setting. You'll also
- find that having a high camera elevation gives you the best 'view' over
- these DEMs.
